Based on the One Book, One Community concept, Literacy Link Niagara (LLN) and Early Childcare Community Development Centre (ECCDC) are coordinating a region wide book project called the Past is Present Community Book Project. The project is made possible by a one year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant of $58,800.

The books (yet to be chosen) will have strong themes that can be tied to the 1812 celebrations, so that the books have relevance to the Niagara community. Two books will be selected – one for adults and a second for children under 6. LLN will lead the coordination of the adult’s project, while ECCDC will lead the coordination of the children’s project.  The books will be promoted together to emphasize the importance of family literacy. A family literacy toolkit will be created and available for download on the LLN website. The toolkit will include a scavenger hunt that has families working together to find out more about historical sites in the Niagara Region.  Adult bookclubs will be offered both online and in community agencies.   LLN and ECCDC hope to engage adults, children and families in literacy activities to celebrate the bicentennial. Both agencies aim to highlight the power of reading and the importance of literacy and community.
