Literacy is more than reading and writing. It’s about having the skills and confidence to find, understand, create, communicate and compute using different tools and materials. Literacy is essential to daily activities at home, at work and in the community– to achieving our goals, and to developing our knowledge and potential.

Adult literacy is for people aged 19 years or older (in some cases, younger) who are looking to develop their reading, writing, math, digital and other skills. Many adults engage in literacy programs with the goal of furthering their education, apprenticeship training, employment or independence.

Programs in Ontario help adult learners build skills in 6 competency areas:

  • Find and Use Information
  • Communicate Ideas and Information
  • Understand and Use Numbers
  • Use Digital Technology
  • Manage Learning
  • Engage with Others
